Dishwasher, fridge and washer water hookups in San Jose

A new appliance is only as good as the valve and line behind it. We connect dishwashers, refrigerator ice makers and washing machines, and replace the old stop valves that tend to snap when they are finally turned.

Perfect Tankless Plumbing, San Jose, CA

A dishwasher, refrigerator or washing machine hookup in San Jose usually takes one to two hours: we shut the water, replace the stop valve if it is old, run a braided or copper supply, and test for leaks under pressure before the appliance goes back in place.

Why a simple hookup is worth doing properly

Most appliance leaks we are called to are not the appliance. They are a stop valve that has not moved in twenty years, a plastic ice maker line gone brittle, or a washer hose that burst while nobody was home.

So a hookup visit covers the connection: the valve, the right supply for the run, secured so it cannot kink, and a pressure test long enough to catch a slow weep.

Cost factors

What moves the cost of an appliance hookup

We have not found a published San Jose price for appliance hookups we trust, so we do not quote one here.

  • Valve condition. a seized or leaking stop gets replaced, which adds a little time and a part
  • Line length and route. a long run to a fridge across the kitchen takes longer than a short tail under the sink
  • Supply material. braided stainless and copper cost more than plastic but last far longer
  • Air gap or high loop. some dishwasher installs need a countertop air gap hole drilled
  • Old pipe behind the wall. crumbling galvanized threads can turn a hookup into a short branch repair
  • Drain changes. a short or untrapped laundry standpipe may need correcting

Included

What a hookup visit includes

  • Stop valve checked and replaced if it will not close
  • New braided stainless or copper supply
  • Dedicated shutoff for ice maker lines
  • Dishwasher drain tied in with air gap or high loop
  • Washer hoses swapped to braided stainless
  • Pressure test with every joint checked
  • Appliance run through a fill and drain cycle

Ice maker line

Refrigerator ice makers and water dispensers run on a quarter-inch line, and the thin white plastic tubing that came with many older fridges hardens and cracks with age. We replace it with braided stainless or copper, fit a dedicated shutoff where the line tees off, and leave a service loop so the fridge can be pulled out for cleaning without straining the fitting. If the line has to cross a floor or run through a cabinet, we sleeve it where it passes through so it cannot chafe.

Dishwasher supply and air gap

A dishwasher needs a hot supply, a drain that cannot siphon back, and an electrical connection that stays dry. We run the supply from the hot side stop under the sink, tie the drain into the disposal or a sink tailpiece, and fit a countertop air gap or a high loop as the installation requires. When the old unit is being replaced, we inspect the flooring under it for past leaks before the new one slides in, because a soft subfloor is easier to deal with now than after the new machine is level and connected.

Laundry box and hoses

Washing machine hoses fail without warning, and the rubber ones are the usual culprit. We swap them for braided stainless, confirm both valves in the laundry box close fully, and replace the box valves if they drip or seize. Where the washer sits on an upper floor, a drain pan tied to a drain gives a failed hose somewhere to go. We also check the standpipe height and trap, because a standpipe that is too short is the reason some machines overflow on the spin cycle rather than leak from a hose.

Local context

Older San Jose kitchens and the valves behind them

Well over a third of San Jose housing went up before 1970, and in those kitchens and laundry rooms the stop valves and threads are often as old as the house. A valve that has not moved in decades can fail the moment it is turned, and a threaded connection can crumble when a supply line is removed. That is why we carry replacement stops on every hookup call and plan for a short branch repair when the metal behind the valve is too far gone to hold a new fitting.

How the job runs

How a hookup visit runs

  1. 1

    Shut off and inspect

We close the stop or the house main and look at the valve, the pipe behind it and the floor under the appliance.

  2. 2

    Replace what will not hold

Seized stops, brittle plastic lines and rubber washer hoses come out.

  3. 3

    Run the new supply

Braided stainless or copper, routed so it cannot kink.

  4. 4

    Connect the drain

Air gap or high loop for dishwashers, a checked standpipe for washers.

  5. 5

    Pressure test

Water back on and left under pressure while we watch every joint for a weep.

  6. 6

    Set the appliance

The unit goes back in place and we run it long enough to see it fill and drain.
