Sizing is what makes a gas line work
Gas pipe has to carry enough volume for everything on it running at once: furnace, range, dryer, water heater. Add a tankless unit or a larger range to a line sized for a tank heater and appliances starve, burners run weak and error codes appear.
We size lines from the meter using the total load and the length of each run, then pressure test the new piping with a gauge before any appliance is connected.

Cost factors
What drives the cost of gas line work
We do not publish a local gas line price; the load and the route set it.
- Total appliance load. sets the pipe size
- Run length. longer runs need larger pipe
- Route. attic, crawl space, wall or underground
- Pipe material. black iron or approved flexible tubing
- Meter capacity. a larger meter involves the utility
- Permit and test. required on new or altered lines

Gas leak repair
If you smell gas, leave the house, avoid switches and flames, and call the utility or us from outside. Once it is safe, we find the leak with a gas detector and bubble solution, usually at a fitting, a flex connector or a corroded section of pipe, and replace it. We then pressure test the affected piping and relight appliances. An old uncoated flex connector behind a range or dryer is one of the most common leak points and a quick replacement.

New appliance stub
Adding a gas range, dryer, fireplace insert or outdoor heater means extending a branch from existing piping with a shutoff at the appliance. We check that the branch and the line feeding it can carry the added load, run black iron or approved flexible tubing as the job requires, install a sediment trap where the appliance calls for one, and pressure test before connecting. Relocating an appliance follows the same process, with the old stub capped and tested so nothing is left open behind a wall.
Tankless gas line upsizing
A whole-house tankless heater can draw several times the gas of the tank it replaces. The half-inch line that fed the old heater is almost never enough. We calculate the combined load of the tankless unit and the other appliances, check the meter capacity, and run a larger line from the meter or the nearest adequately sized trunk. Undersized gas is the most common reason a new tankless unit underperforms, runs lukewarm with two showers on, or throws ignition errors in its first winter.
Outdoor grill and fire pit lines
Built-in grills, fire pits and patio heaters need a dedicated line with an accessible shutoff, protected where it runs underground or along the house. We run coated pipe or approved underground piping at the proper depth, bring it up with a riser and valve at the appliance, and pressure test the run. Portable propane appliances converted to natural gas need the right orifices and regulator, which the manufacturer supplies, and we fit them rather than guessing. The line gets its own shutoff so the patio can be isolated without touching the rest of the house.
Local context
Tankless conversions and gas upsizing in San Jose
Most gas work we do in San Jose starts with a water heater. Every water heater replacement in California needs a permit and inspection, and a tank-to-tankless conversion usually takes one to two days largely because the gas line has to be upsized alongside new venting and a condensate drain. Houses built around a small tank heater rarely have the gas capacity a tankless burner needs, so the line is part of the job from the first visit.
